CHAPTER ELEVEN

ZAK buckled into his business-class seat for the flight home, breathing a sigh as he watched Sydney’s distinctive skyline of Bridge and Opera House disappear beneath low cloud.

His family had been surprised to see him, especially grubby and dishevelled after two days camping out in the bush. He’d used those two days to come to an important decision. Then he’d called them together to explain why he was selling Forrester Building Restorations.

‘A drink from the bar, sir?’ asked the flight attendant, already pulling down his tray.

‘Bourbon on ice, thanks.’ He didn’t normally drink before noon but today he had to talk to Abby. The prospect scared him almost as much as his quick and shocking dip in the sea. She deserved so much more than he’d given her and somehow he was going to make it up to her in every way possible, if she’d let him.

He loved her.

The acknowledgement might be four days young, and several weeks late, but it still had the power to grab him by the throat, a surge of emotion that had him clenching his hands around his drink and leaning back breathless in his seat.

But it had taken that moment on the island to realise his guilt over Diane’s death was nothing compared to the thought of losing Abby. His life was empty without her.

He missed her sunny laugh, that way she had of lifting her shoulder when she talked. She could raise his spirits with just a look, a touch, a word, even when he did his damnedest to ignore her. He loved her positive outlook on life, never questioning the way he chose to live his.

Except to coax him out of his shell. Which, on reflection, was what he’d needed. She’d turned his life around. Had him looking at things he’d not seen before.

Abigail Seymour, who was all wrong for him, had somehow slipped past his defences.

His hand tightened around his glass as he gazed out at the cotton-wool clouds that stretched on for ever. Diane was gone. He’d loved her, but he’d lost her before she’d driven that car over the bridge. Finally, the truth he’d been too stubborn, too hurt, to admit.

He hadn’t neglected his wife; they’d grown apart with the years, both busy with their respective careers. But Diane had been different those last months. Unhappy. She’d been drunk when she’d got behind the wheel of her car that night. He’d never forgiven himself for not being close enough to snatch the keys from her hand and stop her leaving.

Was he going to continue to punish himself for that for the rest of his life? Or was he going to start again with a new foundation and build something worthwhile? With Abby.

The knowledge he’d imprisoned ruthlessly behind bars of denial burst free. His heart pounded in his chest and crawled up his throat. Every part of his body flexed and tingled. It was like waking up after a coma—and he knew, all too well, how that felt.

Don’t give up on me just yet, baby, he willed her silently.
